Thai Yoga Massage
What is Thai Yoga Massage
Thai Yoga massage is a traditional form of massage that originates in Thailand. It consists of stretches (hence the name “yoga”) and the use of pressure along the energy lines of the body. Similar to other eastern disciplines it assists with healing by working on the energy body. It is generally practiced fully clothed and it always involves a full body massage (from the feet to the head) to help the energy move along.
It is a brilliant form of massage that can be practiced side lying which is the preferred position for pregnancy. It is relaxing, yet invigorating and quite effecting at relieving pregnancy aches and pains.
Because of how thorough and extensive the massage is, a treatment usually lasts 90 minutes.
Why get a treatment with me?
At present I am only including massage treatments as part of my midwifery care package and I am including them free of charge while I get back in shape with it (as they can be quite physical to execute!). I trained quite extensively in the discipline in 2019 but while I was getting my website ready to advertise my services the pandemic hit and I did not practice for a while. After the free trial periods, home treatments will be charged at 90 pounds.
Why get a Thai Yoga Massage in pregnancy?
A thai yoga massage can be a relaxing, effective way of relieving pains and aches of pregnancy such as ciatic pain, rib pain, back pain, leg pain. However, the greatest benefit is that it balances the energy body which can help with anxiety prior to birth. It works similarly to accupunture. This is why it can also be used to “induce” labour with a few treatments at the end of pregnancy. Evidence is reduced and not conclusive around the effect of accupuncture or acupresure to induce labour, however, there is anecdotal evidence of it working. It needs to be noted though, that these techniques do not induce labour like pharmacological approaches do. Energy treatments work by removing those tensions (energetical, emotional, spiritual, physical) that are getting in the way of labour starting. It has been proven that emotions (through hormones) affect the progress of labour, hence why being in a conducive frame of mind is important for labour to start. This is also why these techniques cannot be used for when induction is medically indicated and time is of the essence. As part of my care packages I include two treatments at the end of pregnancy solely focused on the pressure points that help labour start. This are accompanied by conversations and clinical checks which should be the most helpful at releasing fears.
